What is TDG?

TDG is short for the Transportation of Dangerous Goods. The regulations that govern the transportation of dangerous goods in Canada are enforced by Transport Canada and are often referred to as the TDG Act & Regulations. The new Clear Language Regulations came into effect August 15th, 2002. This new legislation replaced the original regulations developed in 1985 as a result of the Mississauga train derailment.

If you would like to view the regulations in their entirety visit the Transport Canada website.

Do I need to have a copy of the Act & Regulations in order to complete the course?

It is not necessary to have a copy of the TDG Act & Regulations to complete the course as all of the information is contained within the program. We do recommend that you have a copy on site as reference material. You will need to refer to the regulations to properly ship dangerous goods, if you are the shipper it is imperative to have a copy of the regulations in particular if the facility is shipping or handling numerous dangerous goods.

Who should receive TDG training?

According to the Transport Canada Website, people who handle, offer for transport or transport dangerous goods need to be trained in accordance with the requirements outlined in Part 6 of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDGR) or operate under the supervision of a trained person holding a valid training certificate. It is also a requirement of the TDGR that the person who is adequately trained and who will perform duties to which the training relates must have in his or her possession a valid training certificate containing the information specified in Section 6.3 of the TDGR. If you would like additional information visit the Transport Canada website Part 6 which details the training requirements.

This includes shippers, drivers and handlers.

Does this training allow me to ship dangerous goods by air?

Absolutely not! Air training is very extensive and encompasses ICAO/IATA regulations as well as Canadian Federal regulations. The fines for shipping dangerous goods by air without proper training are very significant, not to mention the problems that could occur if employees without proper training were shipping dangerous goods on a passenger aircraft.

How long is the TDG certificate valid?

The TDG certificate is valid for three years (3) from the date of issue. The expiry date will be indicated on the certificate issued. It is important to remember that a training certificate is not transferable between employers. If an individual changes jobs they will need to be re-certified by the new employer and the certificate will need to be reissued with new employer's information.

It is extremely important to remember to keep the certificate on your person.

Can I be fined if I do not have a TDG certificate?

If you do not have a valid TDG 'Clear Language' certificate, you are in violation of the regulations. Non-compliance of transporting dangerous goods is usually identified through inspections carried out on the highway or from inspectors visiting your facility. Convictions generally produce fines ranging from $3,000 to $7,000 for a first time offense.

Who is responsible for TDG training

The employer is responsible to ensure that his or her staff is properly trained. The responsibility to ensure workers are trained and the manner in which training is conducted rests with the employer. On-line training may not be the answer for all employees, it really depends on the scope of the operation, and some facilities have so many dangerous goods that they may require on-site training or site specific training which we offer to many of our clients.
